Introduction to Archives, Nov. 6-9, 2023

Registration is now open for the Fall 2023 offering of our Core Course, Introduction to Archives!

This course is taught by the CNSA’s Archives Advisor, Sharon Murray, and will take place online from November 6-9 (Mon-Thurs) from 1:00-4:00 pm (Atlantic) each day.

Course Description

Introduction to Archives provides an overview of archives and archival practice. By the end of the course, participants should be able to distinguish archival records from other types of records, recognize risks to preserving archival materials, know what a fonds is an how it’s organized, plus have a basic understanding of the seven core archival functions: acquisition, accessioning, appraisal, arrangement, description, and access & reference.

This course is part of the CNSA Archival Certificate Program. Anyone wishing to enroll in the program will need to complete an assignment at the end of the course to demonstrate their comprehension of the course content.


The cost of this course is $120 for CNSA Members and $170 for non-members. CNSA Members can also take advantage of our group rates, which are applied automatically:

  • $75 per person for 2-4 employees/volunteers from a member organization
  • $50 per person for 5+ employees/volunteers from a member organization
