Advisory Services

One-on-One Support for Members

Advisory Services are one of the ways the CNSA strives to build capacity within Nova Scotia's archival community to effectively care for, and provide access to, their holdings.

Whether you have questions about preservation, copyright, digitization, or anything else to do with your archives, our Archives Advisor, Sharon Murray, is here for you. Members can drop her an email or call her any time. As her title suggests, our Sharon's number-one job is providing advice, practical tips, tools, and support for the archival community in Nova Scotia.

Our Archives Advisor frequently answers questions about:

  • Copyright and privacy laws relevant to archives
  • How to care for fragile and/or damaged items and archival holdings
  • Climate control in storage areas and how to mitigate mould
  • Acquisitions and the Cooperative Acquisition Strategy
  • Donation/gift agreements
  • Appraising records and monetary appraisal
  • Arrangement and description projects
  • Digitization and digital preservation
  • Working and/or volunteering in archives in NS
  • Writing or revising archival policies
  • Writing job descriptions for archival positions
  • Funding and grant applications for archival projects
  • Connecting members with one another
  • And much, much more!

Who's Eligible?

Whether you're an employee or volunteer at a member-organization or an Individual or Student member of the CNSA, all members are welcome to contact our Archives Advisor any time with archives-related questions or concerns.

Non-members who are interested in starting an archive can also reach out to Sharon advice, although multiple requests from a single person or group may require membership.

Site Visits

Our Archives Advisor, Sharon Murray, annually conducts site visits across the province, meeting with members at their archives. She also does virtual site visits via Zoom during the winter months. Site visits are a way for Sharon to provide on-site support, and for the CNSA to stay attuned to our members' needs.

A site visit from Sharon doesn't have to be formal nor is it meant to be a top-to-bottom assessment of your archives and how well you're maintaining it. Rather, the purpose of a site visit is to check-in with members and answer the kinds of questions or concerns that are best addressed in-person. If requested, Sharon can write a site-visit report for your records and/or to help you advocate for support to address problems within your archives.

Interested in having Sharon visit your archives? Contact her and schedule a site visit!
