Descriptive Tools at NSARM: Innovation, Technology and User Response

The advent of digital communication has flooded Archives with users demanding instant and increased access to archival records. The archival community in Nova Scotia has responded to user expectations in a number of ways over time, but how has technology influenced the way that they provide access to their records? After the presentation, the floor will be open to discussion on the challenges of building better descriptive tools.

Overcoming Invisible Barriers: Accessibility for Clients with Vision Loss
Marilyn Bowlby and Chris Judge, CNIB
A joint presentation focusing on accessibility issues of the printed word and practical ways to overcome barriers for persons with vision loss. The presentation will explore vision loss, clear print guidelines, preparation of materials for alternative formats, features of an accessible web site, and options that are available for persons with vision loss to access the electronic and printed word.

Member's case studies examining descriptive practices at different institutions when it comes to non-textual media. Explore some of the challenges with presenters John MacLeod and Catherine Arseneau.

Professor McEachern will explore aspects of early photographic technology, photograph types, and preservation challenges. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

Modern Photography: Transient Images or Long Term Memory?
Erik Boutilier-Brown, Free-lance Photographer
The popularity of digital photography is creating huge volumes of photographic images - are these images the wave of the photographic archival future? Mr. Boutilier-Brown explains some of the different facets of digital photography, the technologies behind creating the images and storing them.

Preserving the Intangible - Digital Technology and Audio Heritage
Richard MacKinnon, Centre for Cape Breton Studies
Intangible cultural heritage encompasses folklore, oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals and craftsmanship. Dr. MacKinnon works to record, study and preserve these for future generations. His research also encompasses the development of new media tools and policies for safe-guarding this "living heritage"

Film Archives - Records in Motion
Richard Lawrence, Videographer and Independent Consultant
An overview of the types of motion picture film that archivists and museum curators are likely to encounter, as well as a discussion of how to preserve them for future generations.
