Request for Proposals: Pilot Archival Workshop for Mi’kmaq

The CNSA has received funding for customized workshops about archives for Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia. We are seeking proposals from individuals, teams, and/or organizations – preferably Mi’kmaq – to develop and deliver a pilot workshop about archives for a Mi’kmaw community or organization in Nova Scotia. A key component of this project will be engaging with a Mi’kmaw community or organization and working with them to create a workshop that suits their needs. This project is intended to benefit Mi’kmaw communities and/or organizations, thus, our aim is that it be Mi’kmaq-led. We therefore will give preference to proposals from Mi’kmaw individuals, teams, and/or organizations.

This project is anticipated to be a multi-phase initiative. If the pilot is successful, we hope it will lead to other partnerships and workshops with Mi’kmaw communities/organizations plus other equity-seeking communities in Nova Scotia.

Project Budget: $30,000 maximum

Contract Duration: 5-12 months, to be completed no later than November 2025

Registration now open: Acquisition, Appraisal, and Accessioning

Registration is now open for our Core Course, Acquisition, Appraisal, and Accessioning. This course is taught by our Archives Advisor, Sharon Murray, and will be held online from November 21-24 from 9am to noon each day.

Course Description

Participants will be guided through the three archival functions of acquisition, appraisal, and accessioning. The acquisition process involves choosing appropriate materials to be housed at the archives and accepting them into custody. Accessioning is the official legal acceptance of those records. Once they have been accepted, they can be processed in the institution and only the most valuable records need to be kept – this is appraisal. This course will teach participants how to evaluate material for inclusion in archival collections and the practical steps required for acceptance of material. Topics covered will include requirements of policy and practice as well as options for a variety of archival scenarios.

Fall 2021 CNSA Courses

The CNSA is excited to announce our Fall 2021 lineup of Core Curriculum courses: Arrangement & Description and Access, Reference, & Outreach. Both will be taught online by our Archives Advisor, Sharon Murray. Registration is now OPEN!

We are offering each course twice (two sections of each) in order to accommodate as many people as possible. Space is limited and spots are going fast, so if you want to attend, register now!

Registration is open to all although preference is given to current CNSA members. Introduction to Archives is a prerequisite but as long as you’ve worked in an archive, you should have the knowledge you need to succeed in these courses. If you have questions or concerns about this, please contact our Archives Advisor.

Below are the registration links for each section of the two courses. Please register for Section 1 OR Section 2 per course – each section of each course will be the same.

Register for Arrangement & Description (online):

Section 1: Sept. 20-22 (Mon-Wed) 9am-12pm each day

Section 2: Oct. 6-8 (Wed-Fri) 9am-12pm each day

Register for Access, Reference, and Outreach (online):

Section 1: Oct. 25-27 (Mon-Wed) 9am-12pm each day

Section 2: Nov. 3-5 (Wed-Fri) 9am-12pm each day

The cost per course is $95 for CNSA members and $140 for non-members. We are now offering Group Rates for member institutions that register groups of employees and/or volunteers from their organization:

Group Rates:

– $75 per person for 2-4 employees/volunteers from a CNSA member organization
– $50 per person for 5+ employees/volunteers from a CNSA member organization

Groups must be registered together in one transaction to receive the discount.
