SUMMARY:Introduction to the Rules for Archival Description (Core)
DESCRIPTION:General description:\nThe description of records and the creation of finding aids are the method for providing access to your archival holdings. The Rules for Archival Description (RAD) is the Canadian standard which guides our descriptive work. This 2-day workshop introduces and explains the rules in RAD. It focuses on the practical uses of RAD and its integration into Nova Scotia’s shared archival database\, MemoryNS. This includes online activities and uploading content to MemoryNS. \nDigital copies of RAD (2008 version) can be downloaded from the Canadian Council of Archives website. We will also have hard copies on hand for reference. \nPlease also bring laptop and a top-level description for uploading\, if you have one ready to be uploaded. If you cannot bring a laptop with you\, but please let us know ahead of time. \nThis workshop is part of the CNSA Archival Certificate Program. \nLearning Method:\nLearning is done through a combination of lecture\, personal reading\, and practical MemoryNS based exercises over a 2-day period in an informal\, friendly atmosphere. \nPrior knowledge required:\nArrangement & Description workshop OR working knowledge of archival fonds arrangement. \nRegistration:\nRegistration is open to CNSA members in good standing. \nA travel subsidy is available to CNSA members. Click here for Expense Claim Form for travel subsidy. \nContact our Archives Advisor for more information. \nPre-workshop Reading:\nWendy M. McDuff and Marlene van Ballegooie\, RAD Revealed: A Basic Primer on the Rules for Archival Description (Canadian Council of Archives\, 2001)\, Chapters 1 and 2.

SUMMARY:Acquisition\, Appraisal and Accessioning (Core)
DESCRIPTION:General description: \nParticipants will be guided through the three archival functions of acquisition\, appraisal and accessioning. The acquisition process involves choosing appropriate materials to be housed at the archives and accepting them into custody. Accessioning is the official legal acceptance of those records. Once they have been accepted\, they can be processed in the institution and only the most valuable records need to be kept– this is appraisal. This workshop will teach participants how to evaluate material for inclusion in archival collections and the practical steps required for acceptance of material. Topics covered will include requirements of policy and practice as well as options for a variety of archival scenarios. \nThis workshop is part of the CNSA Archival Certificate Program. \nLearning Method:\nLearning is done through a combination of lecture\, personal reading\, small group discussion\, and practical exercises over a 2-day period in an informal\, friendly atmosphere. \nPrior knowledge required:\nIntroduction to Archives workshop or experience working with archival records. \nRegistration:\nRegistration is open to CNSA members in good standing\, \nA travel subsidy is available to CNSA members. Click here for Expense Claim Form for travel subsidy. \nContact our Archives Advisor for upcoming dates. \nPre-workshop Reading:\nArchives Association of British Columbia\, A Manual for Small Archives\, Chapter 3\, https://aabc.ca/media/6069/manualforsmallarchives.pdf.

SUMMARY:Council of Archives New Brunswick and Council of Nova Scotia Archives Copyright Workshop
DESCRIPTION:CANB and CNSA are pleased to sponsor a two-day workshop on copyright issues for archival institutions. \nThe first day will cover how the Canadian copyright law works (with particular attention to its application in the digital environment) by looking at the key provisions of the Copyright Act (including the 2012 amendments) and relevant case law. Topics to be covered include: what is (and isn’t) protected by copyright\, categories of copyright-protected matter\, ownership and duration of copyright\, economic rights of copyright owners\, moral rights of authors\, selected users’ rights (e.g.\, fair dealing and exceptions for libraries\, archives and museums)\, international copyright\, and how to analyze a copyright problem. \nThe second day will give participants an opportunity to apply what they have learned as they discuss six case studies that address copyright issues of interest to archivists\, including (but not limited to) photographs\, digitizing holdings\, fair dealing\, and orphan works. \nSpace is limited and only available to CNSA and CANB members. Please fill out the registration form or call Raegan to reserve your place. Travel reimbursements\, including lodging\, are available for participants. \nThis workshop is brought to you in part by the financial support of the Government of Canada through Library and Archives Canada and the Documentary Heritage Communities Program. \nPresenter biography\nJean Dryden’s expertise in copyright has been developed over many years of experience as an archivist. She played a lead role in successful lobbying for exceptions for libraries\, archives and museums during the discussions leading to the 1997 amendments to the Copyright Act. Her doctoral dissertation investigated the copyright practices of Canadian archives in making their holdings available online. In 2015\, she completed a Master of Laws degree\, specializing in Intellectual Property\, from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. Jean is the author of Demystifying Copyright: A Researcher’s Guide to Copyright in Canadian Libraries and Archives (2nd ed.\, 2014). She teaches copyright courses for the School of Continuing Studies at the University of Toronto and for the Society of American Archivists. She represents the International Council on Archives at the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Copyright Committee in Geneva.

No Problem! Engage your Community with Moving Images \nMay 28\, 1:30pm-4:30pm \nCome discover low-cost creative strategies to share motion pictures with your community. Are visiting researchers coming to your archive? Are local groups planning site-specific exhibitions that would be enhanced by your collection material? Are people visiting your web page? Use movies to enhance their experiences\, and do it without exhausting your budget or your patience.   \nTo Register: Click Here \nAbout the Presenter: \nHeather Harkins\, a native Nova Scotian\, completed her graduate studies in film and moving image conservation at the George Eastman House museum in Rochester\, NY. She has done rigorous work with moving image materials of all kinds- everything from glass lantern slides to nitrate film prints to cracked VHS tapes to high definition digital files. Heather has developed and taught an Introduction to Film Preservation workshop\, delivering it in Banff\, Los Angeles\, and Halifax. The workshop was intended to teach moving image archiving principles and easily implemented techniques to non-profit organizations with low (or no) budget to care for their collections. \nIn the last year of her graduate studies\, Heather was hired by the university library’s Department of Rare Books and Special Collections to work on a digital humanities project that transcribed and annotated personal correspondence from the nineteenth century for use in an online edition of the papers. She attended the Digital Humanities Summer Institute in Victoria BC to deliver a colloquium presentation about her experiences entitled “Digital Humanities for Absolute Beginners”.  Heather strongly believes that you don’t have to be an all-knowing technical genius to use computing technologies in your archival work. All kinds of collection material can be used in digital humanities projects that will increase access and funding opportunities\, and she loves talking about this growing field of scholarship! \nImage credits: \nJISC.
