Minutes of the Overseers of the Poor and Principal Inhabitants of Economy 5 April 1820 Most communities in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries had Overseers of the Poor who met to deal with the poor and unfortunate in their area. In the case of this April meeting, the Overseers of the Poor for Economy met to resolve that "Ebenezer Marsh (the reputed Father of the Bastard Child lately born and likely to become chargeable to this town) be dealt with as the Law directs." The group voted "that the above Bastard child be kept at the House of M. William Moore during the time of its Mothers illness, and that a reasonable compensation be allowed for such trouble." |
