Antigonish
Heritage Museum
The Antigonish Heritage Museum is a community museum that strives to preserve and promote a cultural understanding of the heritage of Antigonish Town and County. Housed in the former CN Rail Station building, in the Town of Antigonish. Opened to the public in 1991, the Museum became a reality through the efforts of the Heritage Association of Antigonish and its dedicated volunteers. For several years the Association operated out of rooms made available by the Municipality of the County of Antigonish. There, they began the process of collecting artifacts, books and archival materials. Visitors were welcomed and research carried out. The organization grew. With the end of local passenger rail service, the railway station became available. It was purchased by the Town and offered to the Heritage Association of Antigonish for use as a Museum. The Museum features two major display rooms with exhibits that depict the history, and material culture of the area. A Resource Room containing many valuable references is open to researchers and genealogists. Its collection includes photographs, published materials, community, church, school, family histories as well as census records, vital statistics, school registers and a variety of other records.
