Archbishop Thomas O'Donnell

Photograph of the Most Rev. Thomas O'Donnell, D.D., Archbishop of Halifax. Photo appeared in the 16 January 1936 issue of the Journal, announcing his death. Rev. O'Donnell was born in 1874 at Kerry, Ireland, and came to Canada with his parents at the age of 8. He was ordained a priest in 1899 and served in the Archdiocese of Toronto, acted as the President of the Catholic Church Extension Society of Canada, and editor of the Catholic Register. In 1923 Rev. O'Donnell was consecrated Bishop of Victoria. He stayed there only 5 years, being appointed coadjutor Bishop to Archbishop Edward J. McCarthy, in 1929. Upon McCarthy's death, Bishop Thomas O'Donnell became Archbishop of Halifax, and was consecrated to that office 26 Jaunuary 1931. During the 5 years he was Archbishop of Halifax, he settled the affairs of St. Mary's College, he built new churches and rectories in the Archdiocese, he built a new building for the Halifax Infirmary (on Queen St., Halifax), and a new Archbishop's residence on the North West Arm. He died 13 January 1936.
